There are two eternal questions in terrain making which every builder has to confront at some point on their glorious terrain career. A) Will you make stairs which are scale accurate OR make them so that minis base will fit them and B) Will you make doors and windows which can be opened. This article address the latter one. Of course if there is no interior on the structure there is no point of making a working door but usually if there is a chance to move inside, many wont make a door at all. I belong to that order who always make the stairs so that minis can actually use them and yes, if I build a door or window it can be opened and closed. It has a HUGE influence i ngame when you can slam the door close when some bad ass meanie is chasing you.

There are many ways to make hinges and here is one of them, a bit time consuming one. First I measured and cut the windows from 1 mm thick balsa.

Fear is a powerful motivator.  Fear can keep us from harm, it can force us to plan ahead.  But fear while painting is a burden that keeps an okay paint job from becoming a remarkable one.

Too often when I am painting I have the same thought:  ”This looks good, I should stop now before I screw it up.”  I think this same fear holds back a lot of beginner painters.  You lay down a nice base coat, blend in a shade and a highlight and it looks okay up close.  Meanwhile on the tabletop it goes from okay to boring.  From arm’s length you can’t see that first subtle shade or highlight, it’s just a solid color.

Every now and then it´s good to look things from a different perspective. It´s easy to just go “my way” but I have noticed that I for example run out of ideas pretty quick without external inspiration. Here the all mighty InterWeb comes and saves the day. The world is full of great people and sites that will push your own works on a different level. It´s not about copying something (well, most of the time it is) but from my point of view to have the first piece of a puzzle which you didn´t even know to existed. Here are few sites and blogs that I often check when I need some artistic inspiration.

Massive Voodoo

The first and foremost blog that I follow every day. These guys really make the magic happen. All though it´s mainly about painting things there is a ton of articles which will help on terrain making, basing and more. It´s a pleasure to follow what extremely talented artist can do when they have the time to express themselves. I really think that Massive Voodoo expands the boundaries of miniature painting. What makes the blog even better is the attitude and humour of the authors. If you didn´t know about this blog, check it out NOW!

Gesso Brush On Primer Vs. Spray On

I wanted to take a minute to bring to your attention a brush on primer called Black Gesso that you can pick up at almost any craft store. For my experiments I picked up a bottle of the Bob Ross Black Gesso from a Michaels craft store, and compared it to the P3  Black Primer by Privateer Press. If you are wanting more info on spray primers you should check out this article here.

First lets take a look at two groups of models bellow.

  • Group A on your left has a five man group of Forsaken from Dark Age miniatures game.
  • Group B on your right is another 5 man group of Forsaken.

Can you guess which ones are primed with spray primer and which was brush on?

Before you start to read trough my mumbles,  you have to understand that I have never owned a Privateer Press miniature. Yes, I have had a chance to meddle with a ´jack in a store but that’s not the same thing. I’m first and foremost a terrain builder and then a gamer, but for reason unknown I have never to acquired a single figure from either Warmachine or Hordes.

It has been a while since my last post. We had a little water accident in our house and we had to evacuate our family for 1.5 weeks. So when we returned to our house on Sunday I was surprised that there was something waiting for me:

envelope

I had not a clue what the envelope could contain and when I ripped the thing into pieces, my heart jumped a beat! Kromac The Ravenous!!! My first Privateer Press miniature (or two in fact)!!
