BMR Articles – A Guide for Bethayne, Voice of Everblight by Omnus

Bethayne is the Warlock that prompted my very first strategy article. She was my first tournament list, and I played her in all 4 games of my first Steamroller in 2011. I won every game and took home a first place coin at the first event I ever attended. She’s always had a special place in my blighted heart. I feel like it’s a good time to take a fresh look at her.

Bethayne, Voice of Everblight

Bethayne

Speed: 6
STR: 5
Mat: 6
Rat: 4
DEF: 16
ARM: 12
CMD: 9
FURY: 7
Damage: 14
Warbeast Points: +3
Base Size: Small
Attacks: Pow+STR 10 (Talons x2)

There really isn’t anything exciting about her stat line. It’s very bland, and the only thing that stands out is that she rocks 7 Fury. Which isn’t that uncommon for Legion Warlocks, but it is the defining stat you should be thinking about. The rest rarely matter.

Belphagor

Speed: 5
STR: 9
Mat: 6
Rat: 4
DEF: 12
ARM: 19
CMD: 6
FURY: 7
Mind: 6
Body: 12
Spirit: 6
Base Size: Medium
Attacks: Pow+STR 13 (Claws x2)

Belphagor comes with Bethayne for free, and he has some great abilities. Eyeless Sight is obviously one of them, but he also has Immunity to Cold, Fire, Electricity, and Corrosion. Both of his weapons have open fist. The most important ability is that he has Channeler for Bethayne. This means that she can channel spells through him, similar to bringing an Arcnode.

The Abilities of Bethayne

Flesh Meld: This is a long ability that fills up the back of her card. So let me summarize: if Bethayne is base-to-base with Belphagor, you can remove her from the table and Belphagor becomes your Warlock. Dump his Fury and move any Fury that Bethayne had to him. Belphagor can cast and upkeep her spells. He can use her feat. He loses his animus and if he dies while Bethayne is melded, the game is over.

What’s awesome about this ability is that Bethayne can be an ARM 19 warlock with 24 boxes and Immunity to all damage types. This is damn sweet. But on top of that, she’s now able to cast spells that benefit from Eyeless Sight. There is a lot to love about this situation. I generally advise to Meld right away and stay inside Belphagor.

The Spell List for Bethayne

Ashen Veil: This is an upkeep spell that costs 2 Fury to cast. Target model/unit gains Concealment, and living enemy models suffer -2 to attack rolls while within 2” of an affected model.

Blood Thorn: This is an upkeep spell that costs 2 Fury to cast. Target model/unit gains the Corrosion Continuous effect on all of their melee and ranged attacks.

Carnivore: This is an upkeep spell that costs 2 Fury to cast. Target model/unit gains +2 on melee attack rolls versus living models; if an attack boxed a living model they are removed from play, and Bethayne heals 1d3 boxes.

Eruption of Spines: This spell costs 3 to cast and is range 10. It is an offensive spell that hits the target for a Pow 10. Additionally, 1d6 of the nearest models also suffer a Pow 10 magic damage roll.

Gallows: This spell costs 3 to cast and is range 10. It is an offensive spell that hits the target for a Pow 13, and you can push the target 1d6 inches closer this spell’s point of origin.

Belphagor’s Animus

Despoiler: Center a 5” AOE Cloud effect on this model that remains centered on this model if it moves. Enemy models that enter or end their activations in the AOE suffer 1 damage point. This lasts for 1 Round.

The Feat of Bethayne

Litany of Everblight: Friendly Faction models in her control area gain boosted attack rolls on their spells and boosted damage rolls for their spells. Additionally, her Warbeasts can use their animi without being forced.

This is often the aspect of Bethayne that players get really focused on. There is a lot of potential to get a huge amount of work out of this feat, but you need to be cautious and try to make sure your list will be effective on turns without this feat.

Key Models with Bethayne

Spell Martyr: Despite Bethayne bringing a Channeler companion beast with her to every game, I still recommend bringing at least 2 Spell Martyrs whenever possible. Belphagor is her armor, and you don’t want to lose him too early in the game. Spell Martyrs are easily worth the investment.

SpellMartyrs

Hex Hunters: I absolutely love Hex Hunters with Bethayne. Many players will say they are an auto-include for her lists. This is entirely due to their synergy with her feat. I think 95% of Bethayne lists should include Hex Hunters because they are only 8 points, and even a single unit makes great use of her solid feat.

HexHunters

Blackfrost Shard: These are great with Bethayne for the same reason we like the Hex Hunters. They have solid spells, and Bethayne just makes them better. But they also bring a much needed damage buff for Bethayne, which helps play in more match ups.

BlackfrostShard

Croak Raiders: These froggies are insane with Bethayne. Blood Thorn on their 3 Inch AOE is great, and when you don’t need the AOE they have Fire and Corrosion on the spears. Additionally, they have Advanced Deployment and they can make use of Ashen Veil or Carnivore if the situation calls for it. This is probably the first thing I start with when making a Bethayne list right now.

CroakRaiders

Strider Rangers: Striders see a fair amount of play with Bethayne for the same reason as Croak Raiders. They are a great target for Blood Thorn, and they really help Bethayne deal with some frustrating infantry that our opponents like to throw at us. I think you should still grab Raiders first, but don’t forget about Striders.

Gatormen Posse: Gators with Dirge of Mists and Ashen Veil are infuriating to remove from the table for many lists. They bring a reasonable threat to infantry and heavies. Gators are a solid choice for Bethayne.

Shepherd: Bethayne doesn’t need very much Fury Management because she doesn’t run beast heavy and she spends a lot of Fury. But a single Shepherd is really good for her because she hates healing her beasts. She almost always has too many things to do with her Fury. Fit in one Shepherd if you can.

Shepherd

Beasts: There really aren’t any specific beasts that Bethayne likes. I generally see a mix of our classics. Some mix of Angelius, Scythean, Ravagore, and Shredder. But the Archangel is a nice pick for her if you have the points. She likes the mobility of the Ride-By-Attack, combined with a mixed Melee/Ranged threat.

Lists for Bethayne

There are a variety of ways to build lists for Bethayne. There has never been “The List” for her. Many players have found combinations they enjoy, but she just has too many options to really settle into only one list.

The first list that I would like to go over is the version that I played in the Team Tournament at Templecon 2013. I had some really tough games versus Gaspy3 and Denny1. It has a few tier benefits: reduced price for Hellions, +2 speed on the warbeasts on turn 1, and my opponent’s spells and animi cost 1 more to cast during the first turn.

This is what I would consider a balanced Bethayne list. It should probably be the place to start if you want to learn to play her. It is a nice range of our classic beasts combined with two of the most powerful units for her.

This list is designed to bring variable threats and make good use of the whole suite of Bethayne’s spells. It is a nice mix of armor cracking and anti-infantry. If you are looking for an opportunity to play your Archangel, this is a good way to do it.

This list is very close to an idea Nicholas Freeman posted in the Legion Facebook Group. The overall goal is to completely screw over Cryx and really any single would infantry spam. As Nicholas said when he posted it: this will not make you any friends!

This is a variation on the previous list, to fit in Croak Raiders and a Shredder. This isn’t quite as an extreme of skew list, but it still provides lots of anti-infantry combined with powerful guns.

Conclusion

Bethayne has never been that popular with the majority of Legion players, but there is a lot to about her to enjoy on the table. She’s a powerful threat against Cryx at the very least, and new releases are creating interesting options to make her even better. I think we’re reaching a time when players should take another look at the Voice of Everblight.
