Ghools’ Painting Tips – Basic Principles of Washes

This video covers some basic techniques, and reasons for using a wash. I cover the basic principles and my basic wash recipe, which is easy to tweak and adjust to each painter’s preference.

There is some very basic stuff covered here, but for the more advanced painters, I show you how to use washes to create a smooth shift from one colour to the next , even though it’s all the colours of a rainbow.

Basic Wash Recipe:
50% Water
25% Matte Medium
25% Paint or Ink

Inks will always provide a more intense colour. So, it’s best to start with a small amount and adjust upwards as needed. You can also adjust the water to medium ratios for a thinner, more transparent wash, or add more medium for a thicker wash that stays put.
