The summer months bring a ton of change to the gaming community, People are heading to conventions and on great adventures. And It is not just our readership who are off on quests to visit major events like Lock and Load, Gencon, PAX, or any other number of amazing conventions.

Our own staff will be adventuring to various conventions and as such will not be with their trusty computers. As such we plan to dial back the release schedule from now until the end of July.

During this time we plan to release content every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You can however expect to get some coverage from the upcoming lock and load! and trust me when I say that Ghool has some amazing paint jobs up his sleeve from what little previews the rest of us have seen here at HCO.

Many painters struggle with their brushes, and have as many questions as there are types and brands of brushes. What brand is the best? What kind of hair should it have? How do I take care of them? How long will they last? Are the high quality brushes worth the price? I’ll attempt to answer all of these questions in this review.

In order to give the most objective opinion on which brushes I find to be the best, I placed an order for several different brands, and in several price ranges. I opted to include the ‘Big 3′ that all the professional miniature painters suggest; Windsor & Newton, Raphael, and Da Vinci. I have also included in this compaative review one less expensive brand, which is the same hair (Kolinsky Sable) as the ‘Big 3′; Rosemary & Co.

My brush for measure is the Windsor & Newton Series 7. I have used these brushes for over 5 years, and they are the standard against which all brushes I have used since are compared. I will concede that I used little else in my time painting professionally. But I found that I had no need to use anything else, as they were available locally, albeit expensive.

Whew. Back to things. Sorry for the delay on this (still wondering if anyone is following it). Due to health stuff, work stuff and other stuff Scott and I have been putting this one off. Thankfully we finally got things started again!

Recap:

So last time we saw the Rusted Heroes, Mordant had battle honors that granted him +1 to his attacks. The Beserker can re-roll one damage die and, sadly, Halsten got a concussion and could not charge. Rathar also took some damage and had his armor reduced by 1. So far the score stands at Dragon Knights: 2 Norse 1 with all painting being done on time.

Growing-Up Geek

My son is almost 3. My wife and I are expecting another boy this summer.

Needless to say, having a child is an unparalleled life-changing event. There are numerous blogs, articles, and self-help books that are designed to help a dad cope with everything from his wife’s kaleidoscope of emotional/hormonal fluctuations, to the social challenges that a newborn can impose, but I have found one topic to be quite lacking in all of this rhetoric:

What happens to my hobbies when the baby’s born?

As a hard core geek with an awe inspiring collection of boardgames, video games, and miniatures, I was unsure exactly what fatherhood held in store. I imagined beating my forehead against my tear-stained keyboard as the vultures on craigslist & eBay scooped up my lifetime of treasures so I could afford more hypo-allergenic baby wipes and Teletubby videos.

As a new father, like all other aspects of your life, your geek life must also change.

In the previous article I managed to mix the plaster and pour it into the mold. Now let´s see what I cooked up!

It´s good to have same mixed plaster somewhere where you can check how dry the plaster is without messing around with the mold. I “intentionally” splashed plaster all over my work desk so it was easy for me to monitor the drying process.

Six rules to live by.

  1. There is no right and wrong. Each of us must find our own happy painting spirit, and our own path of miniature painting. Others can offer helpful advice and guidance, telling us what has worked for them, but what worked for them may not work for us, and vice versa.
  2. There are no mistakes. There are only accidents. When painting with the happy painting spirit, it is up to us to make our accidents into happy accidents, which while not intended can bring interesting life to our miniatures.
  3. There is no fear. Nothing is more paralyzing to an artist than fretting that the mini won’t be good enough, or that the technique is too difficult, or that we won’t have time to finish. Just forge ahead, and we will always make progress.
  4. There are no deadlines. All of us have our own stresses, and miniature painting can contribute to that, if we have miniatures for clients, or miniatures which have to be finished for this gaming night or that convention. It is important sometimes to paint, just for ourselves, some pieces which are finished when we say they are, because we are happy with them, and not for any lesser reason.
  5. There are no critics. We should listen to others’ suggestions, but not feel bound to follow them or pay attention to criticism. It’s also good not to pay too much attention to our inner critics, especially in the early stages of a piece.
  6. There are no rules. Never be afraid to paint outside the lines!
