“So Scott, next Thursday how about we try out some Rusted Heroes?”

“What the hell is that?”

“It’s this miniature game I got off of a trade from barter town.”

“Hu, sure why not.

“Let’s bring some star wars minis just in case we decide to give up on it”

“Sounds good, we’ll play some Rusted Heroes [said sarcastically] on Thursday.”

This is another one of those games that I have waited for, for quite a while. I remember the game in its infancy; paper cards with sharpie marks on them and small scraps of paper to represent items. Even playing like that I loved it. We had countless rules debates and brainstorming to help the creator out. Thankfully Jason’s vision has finally become a reality. While, you can’t necessarily carry it around in your wallet – as was originally intended – the game turned out wonderfully. It is nice to see a finished product of this quality and originality.

board

For a quick game replicate this board.

Who can’t stop playing this damn game? Me that’s who! Anyway having had a few more weeks and games behind me I thought this game deserved another word or two. It seems this game is one that really deserves a few weeks of game play. Usually with games like this one can play 2-4 games and get a sense of what is going on, strategy and basic game management. While you might be able to grasp some basic strategy and rules there are quite a few more levels to this game that only extra game play and experience can expose.

Puppets on board

Cute little minis that like to rip out their own stuffing? Yes, please. This is another game I was trying to avoid. Unfortunately, I managed to get my hands on a few of the miniatures and painted them up. Then I got my hands on some more ( including some of the LEs) and painted some more up. Then I just picked up the game because, well I had all the pieces everyone was looking for.

Puppet Wars is a game that takes place in the world of Malifaux. Specifically, the game takes place on the bayou workbench of one Zoraida. She is essentially the Baba Yaga of the Malifaux-verse. Basically, the voodoo puppets of other Malifaux characters come to life and wage a war against each other. Don’t worry though, some needle and thread will make it all better.

I wasn’t going to play it. I wasn’t going to buy it. It was expensive and more stuff to paint. So why did I say yes when Scott asked me to do a few games with him? He had just picked it up and suggested it and I said “he no worries, you have the key to the game store, want to test it out tomorrow morning”. He was on board and thus we set sail.

Navel combat has never been cooler than in this game. I have played Uncharted seas, the old CCG Pirates game by Wizkids, and Man O War, but nothing has compared to this game. So let’s get down to business because I don’t know about you but I had no real concept of this game, it’s rules, contents or general fluff.

I had heard good things about it, then I was asked, “How much would you be willing to pay for it”. So I bought it. I figured if i didn’t like it I could just sell it on Ebay. Honestly, the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw it on the Wizkids website was, ” Oh great, we get to go through Dragon Dice again…”.

My friends and I broke into the game immediately. It was honestly not what I expected, but in a good way. We got everything out and found quite a nicely put together product. It had 130 beautiful dice, 4 dice bags, a glory counter, a spiffy tin, and some cards.

Unhallowed Metropolis: Revised

I wanted to take a moment and give a bit more coverage on Unhallowed Metropolis RPG. You can see my previous review of it here. Unhallowed Metropolis Revised should be on your store shelves already and if its not go ask your Local game store why not.

After reading this book from cover to cover I need to re state how wonderful this book is. As someone who is a fan of altered historic or Altered time line literature that has become more prevalent in today’s literature such as books like World War: Z, Abraham Lincoln vampire hunter, or pride and prejudice and zombies.

Review- Wolsung: Steam Pulp Fantasy

http://www.steampulpfantasy.com/

Test drive rules are located at:
http://www.steampulpfantasy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/WolsungTestDrive.pdf
(This review is based off the Test Drive rules)

Wolsung is a colorful, simple new game coming out from a Polish group called Kuźnia Gier. They have managed to get their countrymen at Micro Art Studio to come out with miniatures for the setting too, and like all things Micro Art, they are as detailed and characterful as any miniature you might want. In fact, it was from the miniatures that I found the Wolsung system. (Which created a bit of confusion. I went into it expecting this to be a miniatures wargame for some reason)

Basic RGB

What happens when former GW employees decide to break away and indulge their creative desires? No, not genetically altered moles that look like goblins, you get Kings of War. This is a new large-scale table top warfare game that at first glance will have people saying, “Oh that’s just like Warhammer”. If someone sees this game, says that and you are around tell them they are wrong and should feel bad for saying such things. Then hit them with a stick. This is most definitely not Warhammer.

I was fortunate enough to see this newly released UK based game in action. A friendly Boston area player of the game ran some very well done demos at the local gaming store. While going through the process of learning the game (rules here) the thing that struck me most was the fluidity of the rules. There was little to no referencing of the rules, and game play was concluded in about 45 minutes. I can’t play a game of Warhammer: War bands in 45 minutes!

Do you play Warhammer? Are you tired of spending months painting a unit only to have it be one tenth of the force you finally field? Do you loathe the prospect of expanding your army due to cost and time? Then Battleground: Fantasy Warfare will be a breath of fresh air for you.

I was skeptical at first. Being a die-hard miniature gamer and painter I approached this game and it’s take to the large scale warfare game with reluctance. I was worried it might displace and or mock my collection of Warhammer armies that I so meticulously collected, assembled and painted.

Then one day I broke down and decided to jump in to it.
