ImageThe Spiel is a ‘Game of the Year’ award in Germany. This one award will shape the sales of a game for the following year. It is given to light “gateway games” that should fit in with just about any game collection. The nominees have now been announced! The three titles include:

Augustus, by Paolo Mori is a light euro in which players are trying to complete objectives and control territory with a bingo-draw mechanic.Image Players hope to draw the correct symbol out of the bag to complete objective cards set out on the board. Reminds me a little of the decision process from Streams.

Hanabi from Antoine Bauza(does that man ever sleep?) is a fun light cooperative card game. It is just about to complete a wider release in Imagethe states. Players must work together to complete as many card sets as possible. This is complicated as players cannot see their own cards; They must rely on information provided by their teammates. This is a great bar game and not one to over-think about.

Finally we have Qwixx from Steffen Benndorf. This too is a little like Streams, lols. It’s a press your luck dice game. It has not yet been released in the states. I can’t quite see how this one feels new or fresh on the market. Players roll two neutral dice and a number of available colored dice. The sums of those dice are then used to cross off available values from a sheet, lending to an end-game scoring.

Well, I hope Hanabi takes the award. I feel it has a unique place on the market. The other two were less than overwhelming. I am super surprised that Escape the Curse of the Temple didn’t make this list as it is perfect for the category!!

Some of you may have seen our previous article about Sedition Wars and some of you may just be tuning in now. For those that don’t know Sedition wars is a project by Studio McVey. The main people behind the studio are Mike and Ali McVey who some people may know from Mikes time with GW or their time on US soil working with Privateer Press back in the day.

Studio McVey recently released a set of alpha rules & cards for people to try out and see where the game is headed. there are three factions so far in the game each with a unique look and background. the initial play test is meant for two players to match up and duke it out.

The game uses a 2d6 mechanic similar to warmachine where 2d6+modifier vs target number = success. One main difference is that any six you roll may be then re rolled and the new number added to your initial result as well. As for the gaming area it will be a grid based system and there is a plan for an interlocking tile set once the game is released.

The Alpha rules and Cards only have information on the Vanguard and Strain but it definitely will give you a good sense of where they are headed with this game. So go take a peek!

In September Wyrd Miniatures will be releasing their new game Puppet Wars which is a board game for 2-4 players and using cards and miniatures similar to their first game Malifaux.  A game should take 30-75 minutes depending if your wanting a small quick and dirty game or if your using a full toy box of models.

Malifaux as usual has the rules up on-line for free, as well as a set of game maps that you can use for playing or can even edit yourself which is quite a nice.

Unhallowed Metropolis is the gas-mask chic role-playing game of Neo-Victorian horror.

It has been two hundred years since first the outbreak of the Plague, when the dead rose to feed on the flesh of the living. Countless millions perished in the chaos that followed. It was the dawn of a new dark age.

London, the capital of the Neo-Victorian Empire, is a vast, densely crowded city. Beneath the towering walls and crackling Tesla towers, where the fallout of a thousand crematoria darkens the streets, ten-million souls live in squalor. Predators, human and inhuman, stalk the slums and rookeries, preying on the unwary and the helpless.

Beneath the haunted streets, resurrection men and body snatchers hock their grisly wares at blood-stained meat markets. Their clients are degenerate ghouls and amateur anatomists who practice the outlawed science of reanimation.

Driven by an insatiable hunger for immortality, physicians search tirelessly for the elixir vitae, the fabled alchemical solution that promises life eternal and a cure for the Plague.

I wanted to take a bit of your time today to let you know about a Deadfellas a card game by our friends over at Exile Game Studio who are known for their award winning RPG Hollow Earth Expedition.

The game was created by Jesper Myrfors, Brian Snōddy, and James Ernest. For those fans of the Iron Kingdoms you will have seen Brian’s art in some of the Iron Kingdoms RPG product line.

Deadfellas is done and ready to go to the printer, but the Exile Games development budget is currently dedicated to Hollow Earth Expedition. Now they really don’t want to make people wait, though, so they’re asking for your help so they can publish Deadfellas as soon as possible.
