Whew. Back to things. Sorry for the delay on this (still wondering if anyone is following it). Due to health stuff, work stuff and other stuff Scott and I have been putting this one off. Thankfully we finally got things started again!

Recap:

So last time we saw the Rusted Heroes, Mordant had battle honors that granted him +1 to his attacks. The Beserker can re-roll one damage die and, sadly, Halsten got a concussion and could not charge. Rathar also took some damage and had his armor reduced by 1. So far the score stands at Dragon Knights: 2 Norse 1 with all painting being done on time.

Six rules to live by.

  1. There is no right and wrong. Each of us must find our own happy painting spirit, and our own path of miniature painting. Others can offer helpful advice and guidance, telling us what has worked for them, but what worked for them may not work for us, and vice versa.
  2. There are no mistakes. There are only accidents. When painting with the happy painting spirit, it is up to us to make our accidents into happy accidents, which while not intended can bring interesting life to our miniatures.
  3. There is no fear. Nothing is more paralyzing to an artist than fretting that the mini won’t be good enough, or that the technique is too difficult, or that we won’t have time to finish. Just forge ahead, and we will always make progress.
  4. There are no deadlines. All of us have our own stresses, and miniature painting can contribute to that, if we have miniatures for clients, or miniatures which have to be finished for this gaming night or that convention. It is important sometimes to paint, just for ourselves, some pieces which are finished when we say they are, because we are happy with them, and not for any lesser reason.
  5. There are no critics. We should listen to others’ suggestions, but not feel bound to follow them or pay attention to criticism. It’s also good not to pay too much attention to our inner critics, especially in the early stages of a piece.
  6. There are no rules. Never be afraid to paint outside the lines!

The Campaign continues!

Week three finds the Norse and the Dragon Knights all tied up as far as the campaign goes. Game one saw a hard core defense by the Dragon Knights, and game two saw the Norse defend their camp with great resolve.

Hi, I’m David, and I have faction ADD.

My current project is a Khador army. I’m starting small, just 20 points. The army will be Sorscha, Juggernaut, Destroyer, and five Man-O-War. Just like the 2-player battlebox force, except I’m using the extreme ‘jacks, and both versions of Sorscha so I can swap them out. (I might throw in a wardog for when I’m using the Forward Kommander, as she gives an extra ‘jack point.)

I plan to use this blog to report progress as I go. So far, it’s just the Destroyer and one of the Sorschas that are painted.

We play our games before the store opens. That is why gaming with my opponent and play-testing things is so much fun. Unfortunately for me the door that opened was one to my eventual defeat.

Week 2 Scenario

We start off week 2 with the usual rereading of the scenario.

After my recent brush with Rusted Heroes my compatriot Scott and I decided to start a home brewed campaign. Scott picked up the Norse Invaders and I decided to play up my Dragon Knights. Anyway, each week will bring you an update of the valiant struggles as the Norse Invaders attempt to plunder the lands of Duke Rathar and the dragon Knights.

Each week Scott and I will be required to paint up one new figure so that by the end we each have at least 5 painted figures. We decided to do this so that we could end our campaign with a fully painted Rusted Heroes force. If we don’t play with the minimum number of painted characters, one of the unpainted characters must be counted as a casualty for that scenario. At the end of each scenario each of us will get to choose one of the survivors for “battle honors” that will carry over into the next scenario. Also we will roll to see if any of our fallen characters are wounded. Each of those charts can be found on the rusted heroes forums here

Anyway on to week one!

I was inspired by DieselDM post about the hinderance of fear in painting and I decided to tackle maybe the most challenging parts of the Merc´s house; The marble stairs and the inner floor. Here are some WIP pics and thoughts about the endeavor.

I have never painted marble so I needed some inspiration photos. After this I briefly pondered about the paints and fearlessly grabbed  my brush:

Fear is a powerful motivator.  Fear can keep us from harm, it can force us to plan ahead.  But fear while painting is a burden that keeps an okay paint job from becoming a remarkable one.

Too often when I am painting I have the same thought:  ”This looks good, I should stop now before I screw it up.”  I think this same fear holds back a lot of beginner painters.  You lay down a nice base coat, blend in a shade and a highlight and it looks okay up close.  Meanwhile on the tabletop it goes from okay to boring.  From arm’s length you can’t see that first subtle shade or highlight, it’s just a solid color.

Every now and then it´s good to look things from a different perspective. It´s easy to just go “my way” but I have noticed that I for example run out of ideas pretty quick without external inspiration. Here the all mighty InterWeb comes and saves the day. The world is full of great people and sites that will push your own works on a different level. It´s not about copying something (well, most of the time it is) but from my point of view to have the first piece of a puzzle which you didn´t even know to existed. Here are few sites and blogs that I often check when I need some artistic inspiration.

Massive Voodoo

The first and foremost blog that I follow every day. These guys really make the magic happen. All though it´s mainly about painting things there is a ton of articles which will help on terrain making, basing and more. It´s a pleasure to follow what extremely talented artist can do when they have the time to express themselves. I really think that Massive Voodoo expands the boundaries of miniature painting. What makes the blog even better is the attitude and humour of the authors. If you didn´t know about this blog, check it out NOW!

Before you start to read trough my mumbles,  you have to understand that I have never owned a Privateer Press miniature. Yes, I have had a chance to meddle with a ´jack in a store but that’s not the same thing. I’m first and foremost a terrain builder and then a gamer, but for reason unknown I have never to acquired a single figure from either Warmachine or Hordes.

It has been a while since my last post. We had a little water accident in our house and we had to evacuate our family for 1.5 weeks. So when we returned to our house on Sunday I was surprised that there was something waiting for me:

envelope

I had not a clue what the envelope could contain and when I ripped the thing into pieces, my heart jumped a beat! Kromac The Ravenous!!! My first Privateer Press miniature (or two in fact)!!
