Jakob, Valeria, and Veronica

All Jakob ever wanted was to fulfill his family’s wishes and become a powerful Doctrine Codifier. A son who would bring continued honor to their esteemed name. Everything seemed to be going to plan when he gained admission to the prestigious Catermane Academy. Then he met Valeria and Veronica, polar opposites in everything they do. Valeria lusts for action, adventure and the easy way out, while Veronica, with practiced calm, remains serious minded and studious. Despite their differing personalities, the two best friends are united in their shared infatuation of Jakob. Unfortunately, neither has ever been particularly good at sharing. Their constant attempts to win his attention and affection invariably lead them from bad situation to worse. It is to the faculty’s great relief when their antics lead them off planet. At least then the academy will be spared yet another cleanup bill. In truth, it is remarkable that the trio manage to learn magic at all.

Hola Cannoneers!  Gannon back with the monster review for the Soda Pop Miniatures board game Super Dungeon Explore (SDE).  I took the time to assemble most of these baddies (except the Dragon and Dragon Spawn) for a Demo event I held this past weekend.  Needless to say, the game was a hit with everyone and I look forward to bringing the full force of the Consul to bear against those pesky heroes.

Last time we looked at the heroes of SDE and I went over a few pointers on assembly.  Let’s take a look at those villainous henchmen the Consul has at his disposal.  For clarity keep in mind that the Consul is the person playing against the heroes and he has 4 skull points a turn to spawn monsters.

So part of my blogging is to try to help people out with their modelling and painting. Through my various going ons and contacts I have noticed that a large part of the Super Dungeon Explore crowd happens to be board gamers who may have a limited modelling experience. This instalment brings you some helpful tips and advice for the general assembly and painting of your Super Dungeon Explore game.

  Hola Cannoneers!

So a few weeks ago I posted a few shots of the Noh Berserker that was released by Soda Pop Miniatures for their Relic Knights line.  I had fully intended to follow-up the next week with the finished model, but that just did not happen.  I’ll admit it now, I’m an insanely slow painter.  This is one of the reasons I usually never finish an army.  Luckily Relic Knights will be a Skirmish based game so that will give me the ability to focus on one model at a time.

For the most part I stuck with the P3 line of paints.  I like the coverage and color that they produce is great.  I find that I have almost fully switched over to P3.  Some Vallejo was used mostly for the small amount of purple that I used on the model.  I base coated the model with Tamiya Fine Surface Primer Light Grey.  I’ve found this is great for centerpiece models and it goes on very thin keeping all the details you want.

Hola Cannoneers!  So, we’ve seen many reviews on Super Dungeon Explore (SDE) as a whole.  For those that have not, check out The D6 Generation’s podcast on SDE and Tom Vasel’s Dice Tower video on YouTube.  These are just a couple of the many that are currently out for this game.  Here’s a shot of the group as a whole, for size comparison:

Part II: Noh Berserker Assembly and Basing

Hola Cannoneers, welcome back to another Soda Pop Miniatures fizz injected post.  Last time we met, I reviewed the Noh Berserker model for the Relic Knights line and it got me so excited I decided to build and paint this guy up.

As I said, this model didn’t have a lot of cleaning up, so after about a half hour of scraping and cutting mold lines off he was ready for pinning.  I decided to pin his arms on due to the metal to metal and resin to metal bonds.  If it was resin to resin I wouldn’t be so worried, but metal has a tendency to break off during transport or god forbid a slight fall from the table or terrain piece.  With that, there are only 9 pieces to the model so pinning was rather easy.

I decided to just pin the arms, I didn’t see a need to do so to the front and rear armor pieces due to the large surface area that they would be attached to.  The hip tassets have a large pin attached to them so it isn’t an issue either.  I use regular office paperclips as they provide a strong pin and are bendable should the need arise.  I used a pin vice to drill into each of the areas going deep enough to provide a strong bond.  I did the same with the feet, but you really have to be careful with placement, as his stance is so wide he doesn’t even fit on the base correctly.  He’ll be standing on the lip of the base, but with the pins it won’t be a problem.

Part I: Noh Berserker Packaging & Pieces

Hola Cannoneers, Gannon here with a quick review of the Noh Berserker from the Soda Pop Miniatures line:  Relic Knights.  The Noh race is loosely based off of Eastern Asian cultures trickster gods/demons called Oni.  The following is an insert from the SPM website introducing the Noh Berserker:

Nozuki is an active deity.  Not content guide his followers from afar his will is ever present in the minds of the Noh race.  In many ways the Noh’s strict martial discipline is to counter the Hydra God’s influence.  To succumb fully to Nozuki’s demands drives a Noh warrior into a feral frenzy of hatred, battle lust, and spite.  These are the Noh Berserkers, called “Kyoujin” or “The Unchained” in the Noh’s own tongue.  Imprisoned separately so they do not kill one another; they slumber through feverish nightmares within the bowels of the dragon fleets waiting to be awakened.  Waiting to be unleashed.  The Noh’s favored method of deploying berserkers is to open a small dimensional rift inside the defensive perimeter, allowing the berserkers to spill into the very heart of the enemy.  The effect is catastrophic. Shrieks of terror mingle with roaring battle cries heralding the Noh charge.  To the Noh, there is no sweeter symphony.

First off let me say I was quite surprised to see that the Berserker is a Resin/Metal hybrid.  I think it was a good choice though, as the detail in the model probably wouldn’t have been as fine in metal.  The metal bits were originally in a small plastic baggie, to prevent damage to the resin.  The new logos look great and they come in a standard clam shell that most game companies use.   Head to toe he measures about 3 inches (50 mm) tall.

Continuing from last weeks un-boxing of the new Kisa sculpt, I will now show the reader how to assemble this finely detailed model for maximum durability. With these assembly instructions your Kisa will only have one extruding part that you have to be careful with; the tip of her staff. The rest of the model(s) should be nigh-indestructible.

The standard list of assembly tools applies to this particular model:

  1. Pin Vise
  2. Brass Rod
  3. CA Glue
  4. Files
  5. Hobby Knife
  6. An Old Toothbrush

I’ll first assemble the resin cat Relic, and then move onto Kisa herself.

John & Kevin from Soda Pop Miniatures were kind enough to give us a copy of the new Kisa and her Relic for previewing on Hand Cannon.
I’ll be covering what’s in the box, the assembly, and finally the painting of the model over the next three weeks.

This week, I’ll be showing you what’s inside the blister, and what to expect from your box of goodies!
